Rivers crisis: Fubara reacts to state of emergency, suspension by President Tinubu

The Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, has stated his position in response to his suspension by President Bola Tinubu, asserting that he has undertaken substantial measures to cultivate peace and stability within the state, notwithstanding the prevailing political turmoil.

Fubara’s assertions were made shortly after President Tinubu proclaimed a State of Emergency in Rivers State, which resulted in the suspension of Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and all members of the state’s legislative assembly.

The suspension is a consequence of President Tinubu’s endeavors to mediate the crisis, which he alleged had been disregarded by the conflicting factions within the state.

In a national address delivered on Tuesday evening, President Tinubu delineated the initiatives he had personally undertaken to ameliorate the situation, including direct intervention, yet he conveyed his exasperation regarding the local factions’ disregard for his efforts.

The president reproached Fubara for his involvement in the crisis, particularly accentuating the contentious demolition of the Rivers State House of Assembly on December 13, 2023, along with the subsequent failure to reconstruct it.

Tinubu further pointed out the governor’s inadequacy in addressing the recent acts of vandalism targeting oil pipelines within the state.

During his address, President Tinubu expressed dismay over the evident lack of cooperation between the state and legislative branches of government, which he observed had impeded the restoration of peace and governance in the state, despite a Supreme Court ruling pertaining to the state’s budget.

In his retort, Governor Fubara underscored that his administration has consistently prioritized the safeguarding of lives and property, as well as the ongoing advancement of Rivers State.

He asserted that all his decisions have been directed by his constitutional oath and a profound sense of accountability to the populace of the state.

Fubara conveyed his dedication to upholding the rule of law, even amidst political adversities, ensuring that the interests of the people of Rivers remain paramount.

He emphasized his prompt actions in executing peace agreements, including the reintegration of commissioners who had previously tendered their resignations, and his immediate compliance with the Supreme Court’s ruling concerning the state budget.

The governor expressed discontent regarding the persistent obstruction by members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, which has rendered the attainment of authentic peace and progress exceedingly challenging.

Nevertheless, he reaffirmed that his administration has remained steadfast in advancing the welfare of the people of Rivers and executing significant projects for the state’s development.

Governor Fubara issued a direct appeal to the citizens of Rivers State, imploring them to maintain composure and adhere to the law during this trying period.

He stated:
