A police officer from Zambia is currently facing potential arrest and disciplinary measures following allegations that he released 13 detainees from custody on New Year’s Eve to permit them to partake in holiday celebrations.
Detective Inspector Titus Phiri, reported to be “in a state of intoxication,” is said to have taken the keys to the cells from Constable Serah Banda at Leonard Cheelo Police Station in Lusaka.
As stated by police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga, Phiri proceeded to unlock both the male and female cells, directing the detainees to exit and “transition into the new year.”
The individuals, who were detained on serious charges such as assault, robbery, and burglary, are now at large. A manhunt has been initiated to capture the escaped individuals.
Of the 15 detainees in custody at that moment, 13 successfully fled, while the officer himself absconded from the scene post-release.
This incident has elicited considerable public response, with some drawing comparisons to a similar event that took place in 1997.
Former presidential spokesperson and legal practitioner Dickson Jere remarked on Facebook, labeling the incident as “comical,” yet recalling the instance when the late Judge Kabazo Chanda mandated the release of 53 detainees, highlighting the injustice of their extended detention without trial.
Authorities have reassured the public of their commitment to addressing the situation, with investigations currently in progress to locate the escaped detainees and ensure accountability for Detective Phiri.
