The authorities of the University of Ibadan (UI) located in Ibadan, Oyo State, have issued a directive mandating students of the institution to embark on a three-week recess, as reported by TALKING ARENA .
This directive was issued shortly after the students conducted a protest regarding the increase in their tuition fees.
It was reported that students commenced their protest in the early hours of Friday concerning the hike in fees.
TALKING ARENA has ascertained that both academic and non-academic activities were significantly disrupted due to the protest that occurred on Friday at the institution.
In a statement signed by the Registrar, G.O. Saliu, the institution indicated that the decision to instruct the students to take a break was made following a meeting between the administration and the leadership of the students’ union.
Saliu, in the memo on Saturday, articulated that the recess presents an opportunity for the students to finalize their online registration.
He further elaborated that the examinations for the first semester of the 2023/2024 academic session will now commence on Monday, 23 September 2024.
Saliu additionally asserted that the registration portal will be closed on Friday, 20 September 2024.
He stated that all students residing within the institution’s hostels are required to vacate the premises by 2:00 p.m. today (Saturday).
He cautioned that students who do not register within the stipulated time frame will be prohibited from participating in the examinations.
Saliu said, “Following the meeting of University Management with the leadership of the Students Union today, Friday, 30 August 2024, the Vice-Chancellor, on behalf of Senate, has approved a three-week break for students of the University of Ibadan, with effect from Saturday, 31 August 2024, to 20 September 2024.
“The hostels will be reopened for students from 12 noon on Friday, 20 September 2024.
“Students are, therefore, to note the following: The three weeks is to give students ample time to complete their online registration. The 2023/2024 first-semester examinations will now start on Monday, 23 September 2024. The portal for registration will be closed on Friday, 20 September 2024.
“There will be no reopening of the portal for fee payment or course registration after 20 September 2024. Students who do not register appropriately will not be allowed to write examinations. All students are to vacate the University Campus by 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, 31 August 2024.
