Tradegy as final year varsity student killed over N150

Some young individuals from the Amassoma community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State reportedly perpetrated the killing of a final year student of the Niger Delta University, known as Francis Palowei, over a N150 levy at a sand dump, a popular relaxation spot within the vicinity.

Information obtained by TALKING ARENA from a community resident who requested anonymity revealed that the sand dump serves as a favored location for students to unwind, socialize, and engage in recreational activities such as climbing for amusement.

According to the source, a group of youths in the vicinity, upon noticing the influx of students at the sand dump, initiated the practice of imposing levies on individuals visiting the site for relaxation, particularly those desiring to ascend to its summit.

The source narrated that the fatal incident occurred on a Monday evening when the victim, a final-year student, arrived at the spot accompanied by friends and intended to climb the dump.

A dispute arose when certain youths demanded N500 instead of the standard N150 fee, leading to a confrontation that prompted community youths to summon additional individuals, including a notorious cultist, resulting in the tragic demise of the student.

The deceased, Late Francis Palowei, hails from Obrigbene town in Ekeremor Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, and was regarded as a promising young individual with a bright future. His untimely and senseless death has plunged his family, friends, and the entire university community into mourning.

Further revelations indicated that the victim’s father holds a senior position within the police force.

Mr. Ndoni Igezi, the Public Relations Officer at the Niger Delta University, officially acknowledged the incident on Wednesday, expressing deep regret over the unfortunate occurrence.

He assured that law enforcement authorities are actively involved in addressing the situation to prevent any further disturbances.

The sand dump, situated at the outskirts of the community, reportedly does not impose any charges to access it, yet certain youths within the community demand a fee of N150 to permit individuals to climb to the top for recreational purposes.

A police spokesperson in Bayelsa State, ASP Musa Muhammed, affirmed the incident in Yenagoa, mentioning that the Commissioner of Police has dispatched additional security personnel to the area to restore peace and order.

He added that intensive efforts are underway to apprehend the suspected perpetrators.
