Nationwide blackouts will commence across Nigeria as electricity workers reveal they will be withdrawing their services from Sunday midnight for the organized labour’s indefinite strike slated for Monday.
The disclosure was made by Dominic Igwebike, the acting General Secretary of the National Union of Electricity Employees, in a notice issued on Friday.
This action aligns with the indefinite strike led by the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress due to the federal government’s failure to ratify and enforce a new minimum wage, along with reverting the 240 percent increase in electricity tariff implemented on April 3.
As reported by TALKING ARENA, the organized labor has declared the initiation of the indefinite strike from Monday onwards.
While the federal government proposed N60,000 as the minimum wage, organized labor advocated for N400,000.
Previously, employees walked out in protest of the government’s N60,000 minimum wage proposition.
The Nigerian workforce is leveraging the strike to emphasize their request for an immediate reduction in electricity tariff to N65 per kilowatt-hour from the current rate of N208.80.
