Christian Bencomo, aged 21, is presently in custody without the possibility of bail after shooting his stepmom at a graduation ceremony.
Fox News has documented that the Albuquerque Police Department (APD) was alerted around 5 p.m. regarding gunshots at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
Authorities conveyed that the lady was present at the Southwest Secondary Learning Center graduation to support her son.
Upon the arrival of her stepson, he abruptly brought a gun, shooting her in the neck as she initiated a gesture of affection, as stated by the police.
During the incident, the APD Communications Director, Gilbert Gallegos, addressed the press and highlighted the significant level of disorder that prevailed.
Gallegos further indicated that there were more than 100 individuals in attendance at the charter school graduation, mentioning that the victim was promptly transported to a medical facility with prospects of recovery.
Bystanders managed to detain Bencomo until law enforcement officers reached the scene, according to the APD.
As per the detention center’s records in Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center, Bencomo faces charges including carrying a weapon unlawfully, aggravated assault with intent to perpetrate a felony, aggravated battery with the intent to cause serious harm to a family member, and preventive detention.
