UK-based Nigerian woman, Abigail Marshall appointed Lord Mayor of Leeds

Abigail Marshall Katung, a Nigerian woman based in the UK, has been elected as the Lord Mayor of Leeds in the United Kingdom.

Originally from Kaduna State in Nigeria, Katung moved to the UK to study at Leeds University.

Expressing her pride on social media, she stated, “It’s with great pride that my family and I look forward to undertaking the responsibility to serve.”

Acknowledging her new political role on X, Marshall wrote, “I am deeply honoured and humbled to be chosen to serve as the next Lord Mayor of Leeds for the 2024/25 term.”

According to the BBC, she is also a governor at Leeds City College, which has congratulated her on her new position.

The college looks forward to continuing their collaborative efforts in providing skills and opportunities for the local community.

The Lord Mayor of Leeds is a ceremonial role held by a member of the Leeds City Council, who is elected annually.
