Lionsgate is leading the project, with Antoine Fuqua serving as the director. In this biopic about the life of Michael Jackson, Jaafar Jackson, the singer’s nephew, will portray him.
Universal Pictures holds the international distribution rights for the film, excluding Japan.
The highly anticipated Michael Jackson biopic, titled “Michael,” has now been scheduled for a worldwide release on April 18, 2025.
Heading the production team is Graham King, a renowned figure in biopic filmmaking who previously achieved success with the Oscar-winning Queen film “Bohemian Rhapsody.”
Joining him as producers are John Branca and John McClain, co-executors of the Michael Jackson estate.
The screenplay for the film has been written by John Logan, the talented writer behind acclaimed movies like “Gladiator” and “The Aviator.”
While Lionsgate has announced that the film will encompass all aspects of Jackson’s life, it remains uncertain how the biopic will approach or address the controversies surrounding the late music icon.
This ambiguity arises due to the collaborative nature of the project with Jackson’s estate, which has vehemently defended him against allegations of child sexual abuse. These accusations were recently brought back into public discourse.
The official synopsis for the film reads:
“Michael will bring audiences a riveting and honest portrayal of the brilliant yet complicated man who became the King of Pop. The film presents his triumphs and tragedies on an epic, cinematic scale — from his human side and personal struggles to his undeniable creative genius, exemplified by his most iconic performances.
As never before, audiences will experience an inside look into one of the most influential, trailblazing artists the world has ever known.”
