Tears as World’s Oldest Chicken dies at 21

The news has saddened Guinness World Records as they report the passing of Peanut, the oldest chicken in the world. Peanut, who lived in Michigan, USA, passed away on Christmas Day at the remarkable age of at least 21 years and 238 days.

“Peanut was a close family member, and I’m grieving her loss,” wrote Peanut’s owner, Marsi Darwin, in a blog post announcing her hen’s passing.

“We bonded 21 and a half years ago when I peeled her out of an egg, and although I realize she had a phenomenally long life for a chicken, I’m heartbroken nonetheless.”

Peanut’s journey began when she was abandoned by her mother, leading her to spend the first two years of her life confined to a parrot cage in Marsi’s dining room.

Eventually, she joined the rest of Marsi’s flock in an outdoor coop.

During her lifetime, Peanut successfully hatched numerous nests of eggs, leaving behind a legacy of grandchildren and great-grandchildren who currently reside in Marsi’s coop.

As Peanut grew older, she was relocated back inside the house and shared a cage with her daughter, Millie.

Sadly, Millie passed away on Halloween at the age of 15, followed by the untimely death of one of Peanut’s old friends, Luna, just a few days later.

Shortly after Thanksgiving, Peanut’s longtime rooster mate, Benny, also passed away. Peanut’s remarkable life and the memories she created will always be remembered.

“I believe Peanut was grieving the loss of her friends, old age was catching up with her, and she too simply checked out,” Marsi said.

Marsi has many fond memories of Peanut’s life and her time as a world record holder: “Highlights of the past year include reporters in our living room, on the floor filming Peanut in the early winter a year ago,” she recalled.
