JUST IN: Emefiele breaks down in tears as arraignment for fraud stalls

Following the adjournment of his arraignment to August 23, 2023 by the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, the suspended Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, was observed shedding tears in the courtroom.

The absence of the co-defendant, Sa’adatu Yaro, in a corruption and conspiracy case initiated by the Federal government caused the delay.

Emefiele was however consoled by his legal team as he was visibly emotional.

Emefiele, Yaro, and April 1616 Investment Ltd are accused of various charges, including conspiracy and procurement fraud.

Additionally, Emefiele is alleged to have provided corrupt advantages to his associates, including Yaro, who reportedly held a directorial position in April 1616 with a sum of N6.9 billion involved.

Their case was presented before Justice Hamza Muazu of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court during the court’s vacation period.

Emefiele was brought to court by officials of the Department of State Services (DSS).

Immediately after the proceedings, Emefiele was returned to operatives of the Department of the State Service (DSS) who brought him to court under heavy security.
