JUST IN: FG files 20 new charges against Emefiele

The suspended Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor, Godwin Emefiele facing charges from the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, now faces 20 additional charges.

Simultaneously, the government has applied to withdraw the previous case of “illegal possession of firearms” against Emefiele at the Federal High Court in Lagos.

During an oral application, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) at the Federal Ministry of Justice, Mohammed Abubakar, stated that the application followed further investigations.

However, Emefiele’s counsel, Senior Advocate of Nigeria Joseph Daudu, opposed the application, demanding that the government address their violation of the court’s order granting Emefiele bail before proceeding with the application.

Previously, on July 25, the judge granted Emefiele bail of N20 million on charges of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, ordering his remand at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre until the bail conditions were met.

Speaking with journalists after the day’s proceedings Mr. Abubakar said the fresh charges – with 20 counts – were filed at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court.

One of the counts accuses Emefiele of “conferring unlawful advantages”.
